Lloyd Russell was active in the Atlanta gay community as both an activist and business person. He owned the Cove for many years, ran for Lt. Governor in 1998 as a Libertarian candidate, was a board member of Atlanta Pride, was active in Atlanta politics, served as a media activist during the 1960's as well as held the property on which the Phoenix Bar conducted business. His primary focus was education for all. He endowed a chair in journalism at a major university and worked within the leather community to broaden horizons and acceptance on many levels. Lloyd knew in his heart that knowledge is power and knowledge leads to tolerance. In his years, he learned many things about many walks of life as well as many paths. Lloyd passed away in March 2006. He entrusted the foundation to distribute his estate according to his wishes.

The mission of the foundation is to provide the GBLTQ and leather communities with funding for programs and activities which enhance mental and physical heath, provide social support and to foster in Atlanta and the southeast an awareness of past and present contributions of the GBLTQ and leather communities.
